Every GCN layer replaces a vertex representation with the mean of its neighborhood, including a self-loop. Here we apply only the propagation matrix  to the cycle graph from the article, without weights, to isolate the effect. Move the control and stack layers: the four vertices, initially distinct, collapse to the same point, the global mean. Notice that the spread shrinks by a factor of about 3 at every layer.
